Morocco has long been a fascinating destination for anyone interested in minerals, fossils and geology. Its varied landscapes and geology have produced an extraordinary range of specimens, and it is a country that Crystal World has a strong connection with.

Our founder, geologist Tom Kapitany, travels regularly to Morocco to explore its mineral-producing regions and source quality specimens. In March 2024, Tom spent 20 days travelling through Morocco, visiting geological sites and sourcing specimens for Crystal World.

Among the minerals found in Morocco is epidote, a distinctive green mineral that occurs in several localities, including the wider Imilchil area of the High Atlas Mountains. Some of the specimens from this region show beautifully formed crystals, sometimes arranged in unusual fan-like groups and growing alongside quartz.

 

What is Epidote?

Epidote is a calcium, aluminium, iron silicate mineral belonging to the epidote group. It crystallises in the monoclinic crystal system and has a vitreous, or glass-like, lustre.

Its colour can range from yellowish-green and green through to brownish-green and very dark green. With a Mohs hardness of 6, epidote is reasonably durable, although its crystals can be brittle and need to be handled with care.

The name epidote dates back to 1801, when French mineralogist René Just Haüy named the mineral from the Greek word epidosis, meaning “increase” or “addition”. The name refers to a feature of its crystal form, where one side of the crystal base is more extended than the other.

 

Epidote from the High Atlas Mountains

The High Atlas Mountains are home to a number of mineral-producing localities, with the wider Imilchil area being particularly well known among mineral collectors.

One locality that has produced notable epidote specimens is Jbel Masker. Here, epidote has been found as lustrous, deep-coloured prismatic crystals, including groups where the crystals form distinctive fan-like arrangements. Some specimens occur on quartz, creating a striking contrast between the green epidote and the lighter crystals beneath it.

The wider Imilchil area has also produced epidote associated with minerals including quartz, andradite, magnetite, apatite, feldspar and titanite.

For us, this is part of what makes Moroccan minerals so interesting. Two specimens from the same broader region can look quite different depending on the locality, the minerals growing alongside them and the conditions in which the crystals formed.

 

Those Beautiful Fan-Shaped Crystals

One of the features that makes some Moroccan epidote specimens particularly attractive is the way the crystals grow.

Rather than appearing as isolated crystals, epidote at Jbel Masker has been documented forming groups of short, prismatic crystals arranged in fan-like aggregates. The crystals can have well-developed terminal faces and a strong lustre, with some specimens showing a remarkably deep green colour.

When these groups grow across quartz, the contrast can be particularly effective. The darker epidote stands out against the lighter matrix, making the crystal structure easy to appreciate.

 

The Story Behind the Locality

You will often see Moroccan epidote labelled as coming from “Imilchil”, but locality information has become more precise over time.

Mindat records that material historically labelled simply as “Imilchil” was actually sourced from several localities in the surrounding region rather than from the town itself. Jbel Masker is one example where specimens previously labelled as Imilchil have since been given a more precise locality designation.

This is an interesting part of mineral collecting. As information about a deposit improves, specimens can sometimes be connected to a much more specific locality, giving collectors a better understanding of where a particular crystal actually came from.

Morocco is more than simply a source of minerals for Crystal World. Tom's regular travels allow us to maintain connections with mineral dealers, collectors and geological sites across the country while selecting specimens personally.

Tom has travelled extensively around the world sourcing natural history specimens, and Morocco is one of the countries he returns to regularly. His field trips give us the opportunity to see specimens in their country of origin and select pieces that have the crystal forms, associations and quality that make them interesting additions to the Crystal World collection.


A Closer Look at Moroccan Epidote

Epidote may not be as immediately familiar to everyone as quartz or amethyst, but once you see a well-formed specimen, it is easy to understand its appeal.

The combination of deep green colour, glassy lustre and distinctive crystal growth can produce remarkably attractive specimens. Add in the geological story of the High Atlas Mountains and the specific locality from which a specimen was recovered, and each piece becomes much more than simply a green crystal.

For us, that is one of the great things about minerals. They give us a tangible connection to places, geological processes and the work involved in finding and bringing these specimens to light.
