Most people know Greenbushes, in Western Australia's South West, as one of the world's premier lithium deposits. For more than a century, the district has been mined for tin, tantalum and, more recently, lithium, making it one of Australia's most significant mining operations. Occasionally, this enormous pegmatite also produces kunzite—the pink to lilac variety of the lithium mineral spodumene.
Although only a minute fraction of the spodumene mined at Greenbushes displays gem-quality colour, these pink specimens provide a fascinating insight into the geological processes that formed the deposit more than 2.5 billion years ago.
An Ancient Pegmatite
The Greenbushes deposit is hosted by a giant pegmatite—a coarse-grained igneous rock renowned for producing exceptionally large crystals. This pegmatite formed more than 2.5 billion years ago during the Archaean Eon, when molten rock slowly cooled beneath the Earth's surface. Today, it is recognised as one of the world's largest and most significant lithium-bearing pegmatites.
The principal lithium-bearing mineral at Greenbushes is spodumene (LiAlSi₂O₆). Most spodumene is white, pale grey or greenish in colour. Occasionally, trace amounts of manganese become incorporated into the crystal structure as the mineral crystallises, producing the delicate pink to lilac variety known as kunzite.
The Geology Behind the Colour
Kunzite owes its distinctive colour to trace amounts of manganese substituting for small amounts of aluminium within the spodumene crystal structure during crystallisation.
At Greenbushes, kunzite commonly occurs with other characteristic pegmatite minerals, including:

Together, these minerals reflect the slow cooling of mineral-rich magma deep within the Earth's crust, allowing exceptionally large crystals to develop over millions of years.
More Than a Lithium Mine
Mining at Greenbushes commenced after the discovery of tin in 1888, with tantalum production following during the twentieth century. Today, the operation is globally recognised as one of the world's most important hard-rock lithium mines, supplying spodumene concentrate for rechargeable battery manufacture.
Because the commercial focus is lithium production, most spodumene is crushed and processed shortly after extraction. Occasionally, however, mining exposes unusually coloured spodumene that is set aside as mineral specimens rather than processed for lithium extraction.
Greenbushes Kunzite as a Display Stone
Unlike the transparent crystals commonly faceted into gemstones from deposits in Afghanistan, Brazil or Pakistan, Greenbushes material is more frequently encountered as massive spodumene intergrown with pegmatite minerals.
When cut and polished, these specimens reveal attractive patterns of pink spodumene against white feldspar and smoky quartz while preserving the natural relationships between the minerals. Rather than being valued solely as gemstones, they are appreciated as polished sections of an ancient pegmatite that illustrate the geological environment in which they formed.
Gemmological Characteristics
Like all varieties of spodumene, kunzite possesses several distinctive physical properties.
Pleochroism
Kunzite displays strong pleochroism, meaning the intensity of its colour changes depending on the viewing direction. Looking along the length of a crystal generally reveals deeper pink or violet tones than viewing across the crystal.
Light Sensitivity
One of kunzite's best-known characteristics is its sensitivity to prolonged exposure to sunlight. Extended ultraviolet exposure can gradually reduce the intensity of its pink colour. For this reason, specimens are best displayed away from prolonged direct sunlight.
Perfect Cleavage
Spodumene has perfect cleavage in two directions, making it relatively fragile. This property presents challenges for lapidaries, who must carefully orient the material before cutting or polishing to reduce the risk of breakage.
A Window into Pegmatite Formation
Although Greenbushes is recognised worldwide for its lithium resources, the occurrence of pink kunzite demonstrates the remarkable mineralogical diversity of this ancient pegmatite. Each specimen records subtle variations in the chemistry and conditions present as the pegmatite crystallised more than 2.5 billion years ago.
Whether preserved in its natural form or cut and polished for display, Greenbushes kunzite provides a tangible record of the geological processes that shaped one of Australia's most significant pegmatite deposits.
